ARCHES BOOKHOUSE

Today, our longtime bookseller, Adam McInturf, is taking over ownership June 1st and relaunching as Arches Bookhouse!

More details about the transition are forthcoming. We will be closed most of this month for some renovation (paint! bathroom remodel! rearrangement of the furniture!) and restocking, but hope to be back open mid-June. We will keep you updated through this mailing list, but you may want to follow our new social media accounts for more details on the new shape of the bookstore you know and love.

New website is forthcoming at www.archesbookhouse.com. For now, follow us on social media for updates on our progress! Or send us an email to be added to our email list.

April 2021 Catalog: Liturgy, Ancient Architecture, ANE

Please click through for our most recent catalog, a collection of books relating to Ancient Christianity and Judaism.

This scholar was primarily focused on the relationship between early Church and Synagogue design from a liturgical and architectural perspective. From there his interest branched out into many adjacent fields, including studies in Ancient Magic and Ritual, Architecture and Urban Studies, Biblical Studies, Theology, etc, &c.

Keep your eyes peeled for our next catalog, “A ChesterBelloc Jamboree”!

GK Chesterton at Western States Book and Paper Fair

Howdy, y’all! We are excited to be offering some lovely items we’ve accrued through the year at the first (annual?) Western States Book and Paper Fair! This is an online gathering of booksellers and paper handlers from across—as the name implies—the Western States.

We are particularly enthused to show for the first time a number of very special rare items from a large collection of G. K. Chesterton we acquired this year. Among scores of early printings of the better half of Chesterton’s 100 odd single-author works we received many signed items, portraits, drawings, photographs, and perhaps the pièce de résistance, a signed original typescript of an essay for GK’s Weekly with GKC’s hand-written corrections. Check out our offerings tomorrow through Saturday, and keep your eyes peeled for the full “ChesterBelloc” (there’s a lot of HB in there too) catalog any day now.

Also featured––much to the chagrin of our handlers who tried to restrain us from offering large, bulky, 100lb sets at an online book fair––will be a bright and striking set of Rickett’s Wild Flowers of the United States, a lovely deluxe edition of Ruskin’s Works, a 5 volume presentation edition of the 1885 Revised Version for the American Revision Committee, and a primo 1910 Encyclopedia Britannica 11th Ed.

NEWSLETTER: An Invite, an Update, and Some Recommended Reading

Screen Shot 2020-06-11 at 2.32.47 PM.png

We have been encouraged by the large number of inquiries from folks looking to educate themselves on race and policing in America. While many of our favorite newer titles are currently out of stock with our distributor, they will be in soon and we are happy to take pre-orders! We have stocked our Staff Favorites e-commerce page on the website with some of our favorite titles for direct purchase online. Please note some of these will require extra delivery time in light of high order volume with our distributor.

In the mean time, our shelves are well-stocked with used books in Black history and other literature.

Remember—as crucial as it is, reading is a first step. Awareness alone will never change injustice.

Among so many other losses, we were saddened by the cancellation of the Rose City Book Fair,  an annual gathering of book and paper fanatics that we have been part of for 12 years now! We are delighted to say, though, that thanks to the foresight and gumption of the Cascade Booksellers Board, the Book Fair is going online!

Starting tomorrow morning through the weekend we will be hosting a booth, showing off a few of the more noteworthy books we have recently acquired. Among them are the first complete edition of Aeschylus's Tragedies (Estienne, 1557), Brightman's 2-volume English Rite, an early Shaker Hymnal, and the first printing of the seminal text in Seventh-Day Adventist eschatology.

We realize the last thing you want to read is another covid update. At the same time, we've been getting calls and knocks on the door and rolled down window inquiries on a daily basis asking when we will be opening back up. The answer is: we don't know. I, Adam, have many elders in my life in addition to a daughter with asthma. I am bound to protect their safety, and I appeal to your patience as I exercise extra caution in opening back up.

In the mean time, Adam is still in the shop every day and happy to do curbside pickups and send pics for virtual browsing! Thank you for all of the special orders that have been keeping us afloat. And thank you for the calls, texts, and emails checking in on our livelihood. It is encouraging to know that y'all value our little shop as much as we value your presence in it.
